Since its publication in 2006, Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic Modeling and Simulation has become the leading text on modeling of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data using nonlinear mixed effects models and has beenapplauded by students andteachersfor its readability and exposition of complex statisticaltopics. Using a building block approach, the text starts withlinear regression, nonlinear regression, and variance models at theindividual leveland then moves to population-level models withlinear and nonlinearmixed effects models. Particular emphasis is made highlighting relationships between the model types and how the models build upon one another.

With the second edition, new chapters on generalized nonlinear mixed effects models and Bayesian models are presented, along with an extensive chapter on simulation. In addition, many chapters have been updated to reflect recent developments. The theory behind the methods is illustrated using real data from the literature and from the author's experiences in drug development. Data are analyzed using a variety of software, including NONMEM, SAS, SAAM II,and WinBUGS. A key component of the book is to show how models are developed using an acceptance-rejection paradigm with the ultimate goal of using models to explain data, summarize complex experiments, andusesimulation to answer "what-if" questions. Scientists andstatisticians outside the pharmaceutical sciences will find the book invaluable as a reference forapplied modeling and simulation.

About the Author

Peter Bonate has 16 years industrial experience, 13 years as a clinical pharmacologist/pharmacokineticist andthree years in drug metabolism and bioanalysis. He is currently a Director in the Clinical Pharmacology, Modeling, and Simulation department at GlaxoSmithKline in the oncology and rare diseases therapeutic areas. He has worked at Genzyme, Hoechst Marion Roussel, Eli Lilly, and Quintiles. He received his PhD in 1996 from Indiana University in Medical Neurobiology with an emphasis on the pharmacokinetics of drugs of abuse. He received an MS in statistics from the University of Idaho and an MS in Pharmacology from Washington State University, both in 1990. In 2003 he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and in 2007 was elected a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). He was founder of the Modeling and Simulation focus group, has served as chair of the population pharmacokinetics focus group, and was the Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research Section Chair within AAPS. He has served or currently serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Research, Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, and The AAPS Journal. He has more than 50 publications in the field of pharmacokinetics and clinical pharmacology, is co-editor of the 3-volume series Pharmacokinetics in Drug Development published by AAPS Press in 2004 and 2011, and is author of the book Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic Modeling and Simulation published by Springer in 2006. In 2010, he became an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

"The most distinguished private place" - that is how, in 1893, the great landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted described Biltmore Estate, perhaps the most ambitious private building project of America's Gilded Age. It was only five years earlier that George Washington Vanderbilt purchased the first parcel of what would become his 125,000-acre estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Along with Olmsted, he commissioned the preeminent architect of the day, Richard Morris Hunt, to design the estate. The house, modeled in part on the chateaux of the Loire Valley, has become one of the greatest and most important in American architectural history. Its 255 rooms, with spectacular and finely crafted interiors, opulent furnishings (some designed by Hunt), and furniture and decorative arts objects collected by Vanderbilt from all corners of the world, have made it a rich national treasure. The estate served as the cradle of the profession of forestry in America. With Olmsted's advice and expertise, it became the first working model of a scientifically managed forest and played a critical role in the creation of our national parks. This meticulously researched book accompanies an exhibition organized by The Octagon, the Museum of The American Architectural Foundation; it chronicles Biltmore from inception, development, and construction through its Christmas 1895 opening celebrations, and into the present. Original architectural drawings, sketches, plans, presentation drawings, nineteenth-century photographs, and vibrant new color photography complete this portrait of a great landmark. I gave this book to my 10-year-old grandson as a birthday present just before we visited the Biltmore Estate. He really studied the book, and when we took the guided tour at Blltmore, he added some very relevant comments to the info our guide provided. Excellent book!

This book is very detailed concerning the architecture and landscaping of the Biltmore House. If you are looking for just an overview then you should probably look for a different book. We are very pleased with the book. The four stars is due to the long time that it took for the book to arrive.

More interested in the interior . Wanted more pictures. Not into drawings. The history was interesting.

I bought this as a gift for my dearly beloved. She’s been wanting to go to Biltmore so I’m surprising her with a trip there this October. This book is a little something to go with the gift and it’s very, very nice. Lots of beautiful photos and interesting to read (yes, I peeked as you can tell). It’s a nice sized coffee table book too.She’s going to love it.

A gift which was loved. It provides the history of the area in which Biltmore was created and its struggles.

Comprehensive book about the Biltmore history.

Great book with loads of facts about the building of Biltmore . It contains plans and sketches of the house and all the landscaping.It contains some color pictures of the interior , but I would have liked many more . I got the book after my visit and wanted this to remember it by .

Great amount of history and information about this marvelous estate. Thoroughly enjoyed my visit there and wanted to know more.

About the Author

James E. Mazur obtained his B.A. in Psychology from Dartmouth College in 1973, and his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Harvard University in 1977. He taught at Harvard University as an assistant professor and associate professor from 1980 to 1988, and since then he has taught at Southern Connecticut State University, where he is a CSU Professor of Psychology. He has conducted research on operant conditioning and choice for over 35 years. He has published over 60 journal articles and chapters on such topics as reinforcement schedules, conditioned reinforcement, self-control, risk-taking, procrastination, and mathematical models of choice.
