Another hit by Rayne Hall. I have all of this author's craft books and I will continue to buy them as long as she writes them. They are quick reads, but they never fail to to teach me something new. I keep them in a special Kindle folder designated as my "Go To Writing Craft Resources", for when I need help writing my novel. Actually it's called my Fiction Writer's Toolbox. I keep only a limited number of books in that folder including Hall's entire series, along with Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi's Emotional Thesaurus Series and a few others. I love the way Hall writes her series and Writing Vivid Dialogue is no exception. I learn best by example and she uses a plethora of examples to demonstrate how we can improve our dialogue. As advertised, this book is not for beginners and the author assumes the reader already mastered the basics of writing dialogue. This book is designed to take your dialogue to the next level and believe me, if you follow Hall's tips and do the exercises it will. She teaches you how to write fast paced, edgy, mysterious, dialogue that compels readers to turn the page, eager to read on and find out what will happen next.Writing Vivid Dialogue will help you write distinctive character dialogue, add tension to your dialogue and improve your overall story. I highly recommend this book to all writers. I further recommend that you actually perform the writing exercises in the book. This book can help you with your first draft or with a revised draft. I'm doing the exercises now as I work on revisions and comparing my dialogue to the before scenes and it is amazing how much my "after" dialogue scenes sizzle. I truly hear the difference and can't thank Rayne Hall enough. I was familiar with some of the techniques Hall uses, but the way she demonstrated them made it come alive for me. I already knew that answering a question with a question or avoiding the answer created tension, but having someone actually walk you through it with examples makes all the difference in the world. This is only two of a dozen or so methods the author uses for creating tension. This book can help bridge the gap between the basics all authors are expected to learn and the feedback you might receive from a professional editor to bring your dialogue to the next level. It covers several advanced dialogue 'methods' that I've only ever found taught in screenwriting classes (which are 90% dialogue driven). Many of the methods are subtle and nuanced, not for beginners. Rayne imparts the information in her usual streamlined, no nonsense style, with examples an average person can relate to for each technique. Yes, there are longer books with advanced dialogue techniques, but they have so much blah-blah-blah I'm so great blah-blah-blah in them you're not likely to spot the darned technique once they finally get to it 450 pages later! This book you can just pick it up and 'do the thing' without a week of taking notes.If you -are- a beginner, I suggest you pair this book with Marcy Kennedy's 'A Busy Writer's Guide - Dialogue'. Between the two books (a whopping $7.48 investment if you buy both ebooks) you will learn everything you need to know with absolutely zero blah-blah-blah and only a wee bit of overlap. Personally, I prefer the paperbacks!
