About the Author
Swami Lakshmanjoo was the last in an unbroken line of Kashmir Shaiva masters. As a boy his life was filled with a spiritual thirst to know and realize God. From a very early age he was filled with spiritual experiences. In fact these experiences were so intense that his parents thought he was suffering from hysteria. They were very concerned and approached their family guru, Swamiji's grand master Swami Ram, requesting him to help their son with his hysteria. Swami Ram laughed and said to them, "Don't worry, I should have such a disorder." As Swamiji grew older his desire to completely realize and apprehend the world of spirituality became paramount. To make this a reality he sat at the feet of his guru Swami Mahatabakak and took up the study and practice of Kashmir Shaivism. He became completely engrossed and enthralled in his spirituality, wholeheartedly practicing day and night, ultimately experiencing the fullness of Kashmir Shaiva realization. It is to his beloved Kashmir Shaivism that he devoted the whole of his life, teaching it to those who asked and translating and commenting on what he considered to be the most important texts of this system. He became renowned as a philosopher saint steeped in the tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. With the growing interest in Kashmir Shaivism over the last thirty years, hardly any publication has appeared without a mention of Swami Lakshmanjoo's contribution to this unique philosophy.

Although I’ve been reading Rumi poems and Nasruddin stories for 40 years, I become aware of how sparse my knowledge was. Even better, I repeatedly had the joy of sweet discovery. For example: "In Turkey, there is a tomb of the famous Mulla [Nasruddin, of the famous stories]. In the front is a secure iron door with chains and padlocks, but no walls surround the door.”Yet, what made this book even more of a treasure are the author’s own stories and experiences from his life as a Sufi Muslim and his personal interfaith journey. For example, he tells of listening, as a youth, to many conversations between his father, a Bangladeshi ambassador, and a Thai ambassador: ”One of my father’s best friends was Mr. Sunthorn, a Thai diplomat who was often posted to the same countries as my father. Our families spent many hours together and enjoyed learning about the similarities and differences between our religions—Islam and Buddhism. These discussions were often graced by Buddhist and Muslim teachers, so the level of exchange was quite scholarly and creditable. It became astonishingly clear that the Buddhist concept of Nirvana is akin to the monotheistic understanding of Godhead. Nirvana is described as unborn, eternal, uncompounded, unmitigated, and filled with abiding joy."Or this recounting: ”As a child I loved to recite from the Qur’an because I was told that God hides in its verses so that, as you recite them, God can kiss your lips.”.…just small wave from the ocean of gems that awaits you, dear reader!

About the Author
James H. Overfield, Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont, received his BA from Dension University, his MA from the University of Chicago, and his PhD from Princeton University. During his career at Vermont he received the University's outstanding teacher award, and served many years as Department of History Chair, in which capacity he was a strong advocate for the study and teaching of global history. His publications include Humanism and Scholasticism in Late Medieval Germany (Princeton University Press, 1984), as well as numerous articles on late medieval and early modern European thought. Dr. Deborah K. Padgett is widely known for her expertise in qualitative and mixed methods including this third edition and a companion text Qualitative and Mixed Methods in Public Health (Sage, 2012). She is first author of Housing First: Ending Homelessness, Transforming Systems and Changing Lives (Oxford University Press, 2015) and has published extensively on mental health needs and service use of homeless adults and other underserved populations. Dr. Padgett was Principal Investigator on two NIMH-funded R01 grants, both qualitative studies of engagement and recovery among formerly homeless adults in supportive housing in New York City.  She served as President of the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR), culminating in the establishment of the SSWR "Deborah K. Padgett Early Career Award" in recognition of her contributions. She is a member of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare (AASWSW) and serves on its Board. In 2013, Dr. Padgett received New York University’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

Thelma Harms, Director of Curriculum Development, FPG Child Development Institute, and Research Professor, UNC-CH School of Education, is recognized internationally for her work on creating high quality early childhood environments and assessing educational settings. Debby Cryer, Scientist, FPG Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has taught in and directed a variety of early childhood programs. She has written about early childhood program quality for more than 20 years. She is the lead author of the Active Learning Series curriculum books and has extensive experience assessing early childhood programs in varied settings. She is currently studying the effects of continuity of caregiver on children’s development, and directs various projects that provide guidance in assessing and improving child care quality. Richard M. I work with Child Care Centers in my county on improving and maintaining High Quality care. North Carolina uses this tool as part of the rated license assessment to determine the quality of child care programs. What I find to be most common when working with these centers is that they use this tool as a means to prepare for the assessment and it does not capture what happens in every day classroom life. Some of these indicators are not very practical for everyday classrooms, and low scores do not always accurately reflect the quality of care in the classroom. While teacher interaction with the children is a small piece of this assessment, I wish more emphasis was placed on this area in the overall score as this piece seems to be the most telling when it comes to quality care. Usually teachers who interact well with the children understand the needs for the materials and other dimensions this book entails.

The book was in great condition. I did not like the materials it contained. As I was reading the scales, I could not help but wonder if the writer(s) had ever stepped foot into a class or any early childhood level. I could see some reasoning behind the scale, but I could not see the possibility any care center scoring high on all of the subscales. I understand that there is always room for improvement, but the goals should be obtainable.

I received the old edition which it was not good for me. I had to buy another copy with the updated addition at book store because i need it right away for my class. I lost my money on this book.
